You can’t make an authentic Jamaican rum punch without a Jamaican! Not really, all you need is a Jamaican to tell you their rumĀ punch secrets. There are many variations of the ‘secret recipe’ and every family has or adds their own twist on the perverbial Jamaican rum punch recipe.
If you don’t know any Jamaicans, or you haven’t been to Jamaica, you may have tasted a Jamaican rum punch in a bar or at a Caribbean restaurant. Thinking that it was probably the best punch you’ve ever tasted, you then try to re-create the receipe at home but do you have the right ingredients. Some places you look, will claim you can make an authentic Jamaican rum punch using Bacardi or some other rum from another island. This is not true. Jamaicans make rum punch with a white rum, not a dark rum, and it is this white rum that gives the punch its distinctive flavour.
The definitive rum to use is produced in Jamaica by Messrs J. Wray & Nephew. An added tip, don’t even use the stuff that they export. If you can, (i.e. if you know someone who’s going to Jamaica, ask them to buy you a bottle of the ‘overproof’ J. Wray & Nephew white rum at duty free (or better still at a local shop it’s cheaper).
Now we don’t recommend that you drink this rum on it’s own. It is very strong stuff! Instead, use it as the base for your Jamaican rum punch recipe.
What else do you need?
The other ingredients you need for an authentic Jamaican rum punch recipe depend on your taste. What you add to make it special is up to you, however there is one other essential ingredient to rum punch, done Jamaican style and that is limes!
Remember, if you’re trying to re-create a taste that you’ve experienced somewhere before, you will need to ask the person who made it for their particular ingredients, but if you’re experimenting, then simply add fruit juices and try out different flavours.
When you’re creating an authentic Jamaican rum punch, you want to know that the alcohol is almost disguised. A rum punch should not blow your head off like a margarita or a Tequilla shot. The sensation you’re looking for or that you should experience whe you first taste it is one of refreshing sweetness with a slight tang. The alcohol taste is actually secondary even though there is plenty in it.
If you want to know measures, then roughly 1 part rum to 2-3 parts fruit juices. We hope you enjoy your experimentation whilst making your Jamaican rum punch. Remember the most important aspect is to make sure that you use real Jamaican rum.
Yup … if you dont use the JAMAICAN rum then it sure aiint a rum punch.
I have just returned from Jamaica 2 weeks ago. We really enjoyed the rum punch that was served to us in Jamaica. We brought 2 bottle of Rum in Jamaica. We would like to know how to make the rum punch. There’s so many recipes on Internet & don’t know which to choose. Please help.
Hi Mirna, glad you enjoyed the rum punch you had in Jamaica. You are so right when you say there are so many recipes, perhaps some of our readers here may wish to provide some of their variations. Rum punch is made in so many ways by so many people, what I would suggest is that you just try it out yourself as well, that way you can create a rum punch that is to your own taste.
I just finished a rum punch mix that I saw on the internet and it wasn’t right. The site said to use spiced rum, orange juice and pinapple juice. I am trying to recreate a version that we had in Curacao. We are having a party this weekend with a group that were deployed in the military at Curacao and I really need to peg this one down. I have been chosen as the Rum punch person. Really need help.
Hi trashed,
in my opinion, you need to use a white rum, not a dark or spiced rum, and don’t forget that most important ingredient to make an authentic Jamaican rum punch LIMES! Use fresh ones from the market. Give them a rinse under cold water, then roll them around using the palm of your hands to softened them and release the juices before you cut them (you can also throw them on the floor, but if you do, wash them again), squeeze the juice in the mix and then, cut up whats left and add them to the punch. Use juices from the islands, such as mango, pineapples. If you have a shop near you that sells strawberry syrup (try Grace brand if you can find it) add this to it as well. Remember, you need to create a sweet but refreshing drink. I wouldn’t use orange juice at all. Good luck, if you need more help just ask.
1 of bitter (lime)
2 of sweet (syrup grace strawberry)
3 of strong (white rum)
4 of weak (water or juice)
Damn, I have read this somewhere else, but can’t remember where….
Easy to remember if you are J’can. Best source yet. Thanks
When we stayed at Jack Tar hotel on our honeymoon I asked what was in the rum punch. Use Appleton overproof rum (the best, unique flavor), pineapple juice, dash of fresh lime juice, a dash of sugar.
